    Back in the 1990s, the Peruvian government tried an experiment whereby  pre-columbian pottery was replicated and sold - much as we see in the museum stores today.    Such pieces could be exported providing they were replicas, were identified by a label (as shown in the photo) and were described.  The experiment ended in 2000 because, among other things, the identifying labels was used to export authentic pieces.  

    Please keep an eye out for such objects.  If you have acquired a piece with a similar label, that you believe to be authentic, it is either a replica or has been illegally smuggled out of Peru.
